The dissertation is devoted to a comprehensive legal and psychological study of the problematic issues of illegal handling of weapons, ammunition or explosives, as well as the formation of ways and directions for improving the psychological and legal principles of combating this type of crime. The study of the genesis and development of illegal handling of weapons, ammunition or explosives made it possible to propose a periodization of the formation of the legal understanding of the emergence of this phenomenon and to distinguish the following historical stages: 1st stage - the birth of weapons as an element of social relations (from the earliest times to the beginning of the 10th century); 2nd stage - formation, development and formation of legislation related to weapons issues (from the 10th to the beginning of the 20th century); 3rd stage - codification of the criminal legislation of the Ukrainian SSR, which regulates the circulation and use of weapons (1922, 1927, 1960); 4th stage - the modern period of legal interpretation and qualification of crimes related to weapons (2001 - present time).
