Essay

The object of the research is sacred art (monumental paintings, icons, iconostases, stained glass) in the territory of the Ternopil region. The aim of the scientific work is to analyze the features of sacred art in the decoration of churches in the Ternopil region in the 20th to early 21st centuries. The study represents the first attempt at a comprehensive investigation of sacred art in the decoration of churches in the Ternopil region. Attention is paid to the artistic and stylistic features of pictorial works in the Ternopil region churches of the 20th to early 21st centuries within the framework of the development of church art in Western Ukraine. The role of contemporary artists in the region in the process of the spiritual revival of Ukraine is also stressed. The stages of the formation and development of sacred art in the Ternopil region are analyzed. Various creative approaches and the search for a unique style in creating sacred artistic works by local artists are revealed. The use of non-traditional materials and techniques in decorating churches, aimed at the Christians of the 21st century, is analyzed. Some additional information about lesser-known artistic works in the church complexes of the Ternopil region is clarified and introduced into scientific circulation. The scientific work was carried out using general scientific (empirical and theoretical methods) as well as special research methods. On the empirical level, necessary material was collected for further analysis, a source base was formed, and a hypothesis was developed that determined the direction of the scientific search. Theoretical methods were employed to define basic concepts and relationships, and, hence, fundamental theoretical positions in the work were substantiated. Among the special methods used were on-site inspections, comparative-historical, and art-historical analyses.
