Kuminova K. Ours and Theirs in Roman Society of the Roman Empire: the Image of Barbarian of Lucian of Samosata and Apuleius

The introduction shows the main objectives of the dissertation research, formulates the methodology, indicates the chronological and territorial framework of the study and points out the scholarly novelty. The first chapter examines the sources and scientific literature on the issue Romanness and Otherness in the Roman Society of Roman Empire, particularly on: the iImage of the Barbarian by Lucian of Samosata and Apuleius. The study is based mainly on a corpus of narrative sources with involvement of the visual sources. The narrative sources are represented by historiographical, literary, didactic, and other texts. The specifics of the sources, the tendencies of the authors, the influence of the realities of the political life of the Roman Empire and the literary tradition on the formation of ideas about Roman and Other in Roman society of the Roman Empire are investigated. The particular emphasis is placed on the texts of Lucian of Samosata and Apuleius.
