Boiko M. Formation and implementation of US policy on the denazification of Germany in the American Occupation Zone (1943-1949).

As the title implies the thesis describes the ideas and experience of re-educating German prisoners of war on the territory of the USA during 1943-1945. The policy of denazification was one of the two most important tasks for the USA at the final stage of the Second World War besides military supremacy. The aim with this paper was a a consistent and comprehensive historical study of the US policy regarding the formation and implementation of the denazification programme and to assess its immediate results and further consequences for German society. The source base of the study consists of archival materials and published documents that are currently available in 2 countries - the United States and Germany (under the jurisdiction of the US National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, DC, and the Federal Archives of Germany). All available sources can be classified and divided into the following groups: 1) governmental documents, 2) interstate agreements, 3) personal materials, 4) media materials. The historiography of the problem is represented mainly by the works of German and American historians and can be divided into the following chronological stages: 1) the late 1940s - late 1960s (first critical assessments by individual representatives of public opinion, those with social and moral authority); 2) 1970s - 1980s (denazification becomes the subject of special research by historians and other scholars not only in the field of socio-political interests); 3) 1990s - present (change of approaches and emphasis to the study of denazification due to global geopolitical changes: German reunification, the collapse of the USSR, Russia's unprovoked attack on Ukraine).
