Essay

The literary narrative is one of the most important ways of organizing the nineteenthcentury cultural space in which imperial and national projects competed. The scale of the work of Danylo Mordovets (18301905), whose multivolume collections of works in the early twentieth century amounted to 5060 volumes, his position on the borderline as an author at the crossroads of Ukrainian and Russian culture, his closeness to many famous figures and intellectuals, and the diversity of literary practices generate a variety of interests in this figure. The dissertation is connected with a comprehensive study of the biography and heritage of D. Mordovets as an author of literary narrative, a significant part of which represents the stories of Ukrainian history, culture, folklore, and ethnography. The texts of D. Mordovets also reflect the mental layers and peculiarities of the cultural environment of the UkrainianRussian borderland, from which the author of the narrative came as a native of the Donbas region. The author analyzed and systematized the historiography and source base of the main issues of the dissertation research, in particular, the works of Ukrainian and foreign scholars. The source complex of the dissertation research consists of archival materials from the collections of the Vernadsky Institute of Manuscripts of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Central State Historical Archive of Ukraine in Kyiv, the Central State Historical Archive of Ukraine in Lviv, the Department of Manuscript Collections and Textology of the Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the State Archives of Chernihiv Oblast, the State Archives of Odesa Oblast, the V. Tarnovsky Chernihiv Historical Museum, and the Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi Chernihiv Literary Memorial MuseumReserve.
