Essay

The first section traces the formation of the modern understanding of the concept of "term" as a unit of the terminological system and outlines the formation of the Ukrainian computer term in the context of the development of terminology and information technologies. It is determined that a computer term is a linguistic sign (word, phrase, combination of a word or phrase with certain symbols), which indicates the concept of the computer field of knowledge, has a clear definition and signs of systematicity, is an element of the computer terminological system, and serves communicative needs. Ukrainian computer terminology has been established along with the development of information technologies since the beginning of the 20th century. Four stages of the formation and development of Ukrainian computer terminology have been identified. Stage 1: 1920s–1930s – lexicographic works on mathematical, physical, and technical terminology became the basis for the emergence of Ukrainian computer terminology, word-formation models of terminological units fixed in dictionaries based on specifically Ukrainian principles became models for the creation of Ukrainian professional terms that are used to this day. Stage 2 – a crisis in the formation of Ukrainian terminology in general, and computer terminology in particular, began in 1933. The third stage begins in the 1960s, when a certain systematization of computer terminology occurs. Two vectors of its development have been traced: on the basis of Russian terminology in Soviet Ukraine and under the significant influence of English terminology in the diaspora. "Encyclopedia of Cybernetics" (Kyiv, 1973) and dictionaries of Ukrainian computer terminology, created in Canada, are evidence of the difficult conditions for the development of Ukrainian scientific language, in particular computer, in the Soviet period. From the 90s of the 20th century, the modern, fourth stage of systematization and standardization of computer terminology in independent Ukraine begins, in which computerization of dictionary activity becomes especially popular. In the second section, an analysis of 2,500 terms of Ukrainian computer terminology is carried out at the structural and word-formation levels, which showed that at the current stage of development of the terminological system, the morphological method of word formation produces a significant proportion of its units. The most common is the suffixal method, which uses both specific and borrowed suffixes. A tendency towards an increase in the arsenal of prepositive term elements has been observed, which, it seems, will cause a gradual natural separation of the prefixoid model of creating new words and its transformation into an independent method of word formation within the morphological method. We analyze the development of foreign loanwords in Ukrainian computer terminology at the phonetic, word-formation, morphological and semantic levels. We note that the excessive use of loanwords obscures the content of professional speech, complicates its perception. The third section analyzes the patterns and specifics of the semantic organization of the Ukrainian computer term system. The systemic and structural organization of the UCT is reflected in the field model. The term macrofield "information technologies" is a complex systemic and structural organization, the elements of which are a set of more than 2500 terms of the computer field of knowledge, related semantically, thematically, conceptually. Macrofield is the largest field in terms of volume, containing terms whose meanings are united by the integral seme “computer”. As part of the term macrofield, we distinguish the core; the nuclear zone “professional vocabulary and professional jargonisms”, which contains thematic groups and subgroups, within which we distinguish lexical-semantic groups. The conclusions summarize the results of the scientific research.
