Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the study of the verbalized concept LAZY in English-speaking culture. The object of the research is the nominative field of the concept LAZY in the English language, while the subject is the lexical and phraseological units that verbalize the concept LAZY in English. The relevance of the dissertation is determined by the priority direction of modern linguo- cognitive research, which focuses on the study of conceptualization and categorization processes of reality, as well as the need for a detailed analysis of specific layers of English vocabulary. In the study a comprehensive analysis of linguistic means used to verbalize the concept LAZY in British linguistic consciousness has been carried out. The structure of the concept is identified, including its core, medial, and peripheral zones. Additionally, the cognitive features of the concept are distinguished based on literary material. The core of the concept LAZY consists of three layers (adjectival, nominal, and verbal) and is represented by four lexemes: lazy, laziness, lazybones, and to laze. The primary core lexeme is lazy, as the other words are etymologically derived from it, and it has the highest frequency in lexicographic and literary sources. This led to the rejection of the traditional noun-based naming of the concept. The medial zone includes synonyms of the core lexemes, also divided into three layers. The periphery of the concept consists of idiomatic and paremiological units, characterized by figurative and metaphorical semantics. Keywords: cognitive semantics, cultural worldview, concept, lexico- semantic field, nominative field, conceptual field, definitional feature, seme, sememe, verbalization, discourse
