Essay

The thesis is dedicated to the experimental phonetic investigation of sonants articulatory dynamics in Ukrainian, Russian and Polish speech - the CV-model (the X-ray film data base). The new method of analysis of the X-ray films used in the research made it possible to describe the pronunciation of sonants in comparison with articulatory dynamics of voiced and voiceless sounds. Due to this method, the articulatory mechanism of sonority was revealed. Basic tendencies and co-ordinations of articulators' movements during pronunciation of sonants, voiced and voiceless sounds in Ukrainian, Russian and Polish speech were described. The sonants of the Ukrainian speech are characterized as maximally vocal, the sonants of the Russian speech are maximally consonant whereas the sonants of the Polish spech occupy an intermediate position between the sonants of the Ukrainian and Russian speech.
