Essay

On the basis of the published sources and field materials, the author applies structural, functional, comparative, historical and typological analysis of the elements of traditional and modern funeral rites of the Ukrainians residing in the Carpathian region. The dissertation clarifies areal and chronological scopes of highlanders' funeral traditions, their existential basis, regional and local peculiarities, general Ukrainian and Slavonic features, genesis and semantics of many customs, rites, and beliefs. It also deals with syncretic character of Boyko, Hutsul and Lemko funeral customs, their conservatism and archaism.
