Essay

Based on the analysis of scientific works, archival, literary and pictorial sources, the reconstruction of academic, cultural and artistic life of the Ukrainian emigration in Warsaw, covering different directions of activity, has been carried out in Ukrainian historical science and ethnology for the first time. In keeping with the purpose, a general configuration of Ukrainian public, cultural and educational associations functioning in Warsaw during 1920–1939 is being considered. According to the Ukrainian Statistical Yearbook (1938), as of 1936–1937 there were operating the Ukrainian Student Community, Ukrainian Military Historical Society, Ukrainian Economic Bureau, Ukrainian Student Corporation “Zaporizhzhya”, Union of Ukrainian Engineers and Technicians in Emigration, “Varyah” Publishing House, Ukrainian Academic Institute, Ukrainian Club, Union of Ukrainian Women Emigrants, Society of Supporters of the Ukrainian Academy of Economics, “Ukrainian School in Exile” society, M. Lysenko Ukrainian National Choir, “Hutsul Art” (a branch – a carpet warehouse), Ukrainian Art Group “Spokij” and others. The attention is drawn to the most significant events that were taking place in various institutions: lectures and thematic parties, concerts, scientific lectures and publication of books. The Ukrainian Academic Institute, employing the prominent scientists Vasyl Bidnov, Oleksandr Lototskyj, Roman Smal-Stotskyj, Dmytro Doroshenko, Pavlo Zaytsev, Ivan Shovhenov and others, were the most active in view of the program of activities.
