Essay

The dissertation analyses the language and style of the Ukrainian translation of Slovak poetry, performed by a well-known scholar and cultural activist of Slovakia I. Matsynsky. The Ukrainian translations have been subject to the contrastive-typological analysis aimed at revealing accurate, inaccurate, and false lexico-semantic equivalents; the analysis has also established their quantitative correlation. The dissertation states the reasons of the unconscious involvement of Old Slavic, Russian, and Slovak words. Besides, it reveals the role of dialect vocabulary and colloquialisms in I. Matsynsky's creative heritage. It also analyses his rendering of set expressions, many of which are either dropped out of the text of translation or substituted by phrases which are close in meaning, or more general words, or compensated for by their Russian equivalents.
