Essay

The dissertation deals with relics of the decisive ritual role of fire in world-outlook, customs, and traditions of Ukrainians in Bucovina in XIX-XX century. A systematisation and analysis of traditional views of Bucovinians concerning celestial-, earthly- and subterranean (hell) fire and the fiery substance of soul was made on the basis of various sources and scientific literature. The meaning of the strength of fire and relics of its implementations in mediative-, protective-, and purifying purposes are traced throughout calendar, family and everyday-life traditions, household- and medical magic.
