Essay

The dissertation deals with the theory of the "genealogical tree" and "wave" theory and corresponding methods of modelling of languages history. Criticism of these theories by the linguists of the end of the XIXth century - 20s-30s of the XX century and assessment of their explanatory possibilities from the position of modern linguistics are provided. Peculiarities of modelling historical-language processes in the works of the Ukrainian linguistics of the XIXth century - 20s-30s of the XX century devoted to the problem of the eastern-slav glottogony are revealed; divergent and convergent historical-phonetic and historical-morphological interpretations are analysed.
