Essay

The dissertation centers on the problem of teaching linguistic students to read and adequately comprehend socio-cultural information in authentic English literary texts. To systematize socio-cultural issues, five main criteria have been distinguished. The dissertation presents the analysis of the psychological mechanisms of the process of reading, the determination of the main stages of teaching, the ascertation of the relevant skills for recognizing and understanding socio-cultural issues. A set of excercises aiming at guiding the trainees to get acquainted with both target language and target culture while reading authentic literary texts has been designed. The efficiency of the exercise set has been proved by a thorough theoretical grounding and practical corroboration. The basic results of the research were applied in teaching linguistic students in Ukraine (years II-III).
