Essay

The thesis is devoted to the interpretation of the ethnical and cultural process of the Early Medieval age in the South-Eastern Europe by analyzing the materials of funeral monuments. The basis of the investigation is the unified ground burials classification system, built with help of the formalized and statistic methods. The comparative analysis of the archeological cultures and separate monuments typological spectra, extended with analysis of the separate feature groups, allowed to state not only burial rite peculiarity of each archeological culture, but existence of rather outstanding differences in local funeral traditions inside these cultures. This point of view allows to maintain absence of the unified funeral rite among the early-medieval Slavs on the one hand and to state the existence of the little ethnical groups inside big Slavonic communities (sclavenes, ants, venedes) on the other hand. The examination of the development dynamics in different funeral traditions allows to speak about rather quick changes of some funeral rites features during 3rd quarter of the 1st millennium that take place in forest-steppe of the Dnieper left bank and upper to the stream of the Dnieper. These changes should be connected not with the internal development of some traditions bearers, but with direct contacts of some funeral rites bearers. The mechanism of such contacts is not simple. There is number of the cases where we can speak about the contacts in marginal zones (Clochin monuments of the Psiol and Seim basins, as well as the place between Dnieper and Sozh), in the other cases we can speak about migration of some groups of the population (Clochin and Tushemlian monuments upper to the stream of the Dnieper).
