Dissertation presents a comprehensive study of Ukrainian television programming during the election campaigns from 1994 to 2002. It reviews and summarizes the studies of Ukrainian and foreign scholars on the role of television during the elections and shows the mechanism of formation of the image of political leaders by the means of television. Dissertation also offers the model of televised image formation for the political process participants. The study covered the main aspects of television technologies for formation of the image of political leader; characteristics of on-air programming during the elections; themes and content of news and news and analysis programming, televised debates, political advertising, video filmed movies and the scope of coverage in this programming of the activities of leaders of political parties and blocs during the elections as well as the frequency of their appearance on air. Further to this, socio-political and psychological portraits of candidates formed by television were re-created. Consequently, the role and the place of television in formation of the image of political leader during the elections were defined.
