Essay

The dissertation handles the problem how the semantic structure of an educational text affects understanding of the text by college and university students. The major factors underlying the understanding of a text message were determined. Elicited was the nature of relationship between the semantic structure of an educational text and its understanding by students. Based on the structural and semantic analysis of educational texts, their semantic parameters were derived, which make for comprehensive and deep understanding of the message. The criteria for evaluation of the profound and comprehensive understanding of educational texts were defined. Explored was the complex of psychological and pedagogical conditions that support forming of text understanding techniques in students; developed and tested the programme of forming of such techniques with allowance for structural and semantic characteristics of the text message.
