The concept of personal journalism is formulated on the basis of the analysis of the most significant American editions and activity of their owners, its influence on definition of American media's place in system of social institutes is under study. The great attention is paid to the factor of "the personal" in mass information activity sphere. The research traces the modern displays of personal journalism the con-cept in the information market of American press, stressing on syndicated columnists' activity, and also the conversation of personal journalism into personified journalism. The change of press social functions, which is based on American social-cultural context, is analysed and the role of the phenomenon of per-sonal journalism in this sphere is defined.
