Shabetya V. Initial material of Allium cepa L. for breeding programs of the East Forest-Steppe of Ukraine.

Object: breeding of onion (Allium cepa L.). Aim: to get initial material of Allium cepa L. for breeding programs of the East part of the Forest Steppe of Ukraine. Methods: field, laboratory, measuring-weight, biochemical, organoleptic, mathematical-statistical. Novelty: for the first time in the condition of east part of Forest-Steppe of the Ukraine is determined genotypical variability of economic-valuable traits of onion (Allium cepa L.). Correlation connections between quantitative traits are revealed, and leading of them is ascertained. Initial material for different directions of regional breeding is selected; using the selected forms, new cultivars, Amphora and Belanka, were created; morphological description of onion seed is geven; appropriateness allowing forecast breeding forms on the base of seed coat traits are revealed; possibility to grown green onion in east part of Forest-Steppe of the Ukraine from seed as annual crop is substantiated; growth regulator substances are choused and optimalconditions of their use for chemical florets emasculation are determined. Results: sources of economic-valuable traits are selected, which are recommended to use in breeding of onion (Allium cepa L.) of different directions; two new cultivars are created: Amphora- included to the State Register of Plant Varieties Suitable for Dissemination in Ukraine; the perspective - Belanka- is being tested in the State Cultivar Trial; the selected sources of economic-valuable traits are registered in the National Centre for Plant Genetic Resources of Ukraine, and the certificates are given on them.
