The dissertation deals with the problem of the complex assessment design in teaching grammar and its implementation in the teaching process within the first year of study at the faculty of Foreign Languages departments in higher educational establishments. The objects of grammar competence as assessment targets are classified. The peculiarities of grammar competence assessment from the point of the communicative approach are determined. Grammar competence assessment is aimed at the teaching/ learning process management through getting instant and reliable data about students' achievement in using grammar competence. Grammar competence assessment is viewed as the integration of the self-assessment and the assessment of students by teachers. The focus on self-assessment has been made to benefit both teachers and students. Introduction of self-assessment gives teachers better understanding of students' language problems; and students require their self-assessment capacity thus developing it as much a habit of mind as an activity. The aims, functions, elements and forms of grammar competence assessment at language departments have been formulated. The assessment system includes formative and summative elements implemented in the process of study with the help of objective and subjective test items. The approach to organising grammar material for assessment is substantiated. As a result of the research the system of test items to assess grammar competence has been created and theoretically substantiated. Its effectiveness was verified and confirmed in the process of experimental teaching. Methodological recommendations concerning English grammar competence assessment at the faculty of Foreign Languages departments in higher educational establishments have been developed.
