The dissertation presents a complex research on the Odessa periodical press of the liberation period. It considers the general aspects of formation, development and functional conditions of the periodical press in that period. The author has examined the contents of the periodicals, determined the hierarchy of the themes; he showed the process of the development of the Ukrainian-language press and the prerequisites for its appearance. He also proposed a typological research and a classification of the periodicals, traced the dependence of the press on the social and political changes throughout the period. The level of structuredness of the press has been researched on the basis of the analysis of the two kinds - the popular and the special press. The kind diversity of the Odessa periodical press remained still during 1917-1920. But the typological structure of every kind of the press appeared to be changeable.
