Essay

The thesis explores the problem of in-service retraining programs for teachers of humanities. The author analyses five periods of historical development of adult learning in Ukraine. The notion of "adult education" is defined. In-service retraining for teachers of humanities as a pedagogical problem is examined. We offer a research into the following areas: the motivation of humanities teachers to qualify as teachers of English, the ways of improving the education process at in-service humanities departments, the teacher's role in creating favourable conditions for retraining teachers of humanities, methods and techniques to develop students' communicative skills in the educational process. Some methodological proposals are given.
