M. Drahomanov's and paper's "Volnoe slovo" role in history of Ukrainian journalism is turned out in the thesis. Complex analysis of this Geneve paper, which was opposed to Russian socialists, is made for the first time. The thesis analyses the main aspects of M. Drahomanov's polemics with P. Lavrov, G. Plehanov, L. Tihomirov, P. Tkachov and other authors of Russian socialist editions "Vpered!", "Nabat", "Narodnaja volya", "Kalendar Narodnoy voli", "Listok Narodnoy voli", "Chernyi peredel".
