Essay

The dissertation deals with peculiarities of the structure and functions of Self-image as developed in homeless adolescents; recommendations are given regarding creation of conditions enabling them to restore the worthy way of life and positive, undistorted Self-image. The author has conducted the comparative analysis of specific features of Self-image in homeless adolescents and in adolescents living in favourable social condi-tions. The evidence was obtained that psychic reflection of internal senses of life and external influences form an integral system. Excessive aggravation of contradictions between the individual and the environment effects disintegrating of Self-image, which loses its integrity; the self-protection motive takes the lead as a means for self-affirmation and resolving of conflicts. Acute feeling of his/her own self dominates in adolescent's Self-image, as well as striving for independent actions and behaviour. Elaborated were the criteria and parameters for evaluation of characteristics of Self-image in homeless adolescents. The principal approaches were elucidated to studying psychological nature of the structure and functions of Self-image in homeless adolescents and to understand-ing of his/her Self-image as a development factor. Determined were both external and internal factors contributing to inclination to homelessness. Among those internal fac-tors the transformed (distorted) Self-image was spotted as crucial. The author has considered applicability of the obtained results to the practice of psychological correction aimed at improvement of Self-image in this category of ado-lescents.
