The dissertation covers the issue of development of a primary school student as a subject of the learning activity. The research was conducted among the 3rd grade schoolchildren and based on the data obtained at the lessons of mathematics. Evaluated were such traits as search activity, self-dependency, and initiative approach, i.e. the features that can be seen as a necessary prerequisite for successful effecting of the learning activity by an individual. The level of development of these features can be reliably assessed through specially selected diagnostic tasks, which differ from the previously solved tasks both on their content and on the solving method. The findings of the research show that in majority of school students, the level of development of the aforementioned subject characteristics is low or medium, and the involvement of children in the instructional process, in itself, does not provide the necessary improvements. The author developed, on the basis of the learning activity theory, andtested the instructional method facilitating the learning of the general approach to mathematical problems solving and intended for development of search activity, self-dependency, and initiative stance. The evidence was obtained that due to this, the significant increase in the level of the above subject characteristics was observed and the mastering of generalized method of mathematical problems solving provided.
