The object - is the concept of development in the critical sciences of culture. The purpose - is to define the epistemological premises of the formation of the concept of development in the critical sciences of culture (W. Dilthey, Badener school, M. Weber). The methods are - the immanent, aposterior, analytical and historical approaches, the application of the position of the demarcation of ratio essendi and the cognoscendi. The novelty of discourse is based on the complex comparative analysis of the thories of W. Dilthey, W. Win-delband, H. Rickert, M. Weber in the frame of the concept of development. The result is the explication of the formula of the concept of development as an epistemological scheme, which project the cognitive ability of the knowing subject on the historical data and constructs it in correspondence with theoretical forms. This fact entails the ambivalent role of the concept of development: a) as the vector of motion of the very knowing process; b) as a theoretical frame-work, which sets historical facts in the causeeffect succession.
