Essay

Publicistic works by Mykola Khvylyovy (1893-1933) as well as vexed questions in theory of journalism are studied in the thesis. Integral analysis of pamphlets and sketches by Khvylyovy enabled to make some amendments to these disputable issues and became another step forward in research of processes which were taking place in Ukrainian periodicals of 1920-1930s. In addition to analysis of Khvylyovy's esthetical conception, a comprehensive study of comic and dialogic means in pamphlets from his Kamo Gryadeshi (Quo vadis) collection and Dvi Syly (Two Forces) pamphlet as well as all sketch heritage of the well-known publicist was conducted for the first time. It was proven that in spite of some confusion shown by Khvylyovy in the course of discussion (1925-1930), including repudiation of his own beliefs, his pamphlets influenced political and literary situation of the 1920s and present a phenomenon in journalism as well as in literature, philosophy and culture. The publicist disputed provincialism and simplism in art and stood for professionalism and self-perfection, defended independence of Ukrainian nation. In his pamphlets Khvylyovy put forward a conception of 'romantic vitaism' and 'Asian renaissance', which could become a trend in the world philosophy and culture, but it was doomed as a result of high-ranking communists' interference.
