Essay

The dissertation deals with the semantic and functional peculiarities of lexical units denoting non-verbal actions of smiling and laughing in the Ukrainian, Russian, English and German languages. The author determines quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the verbs of smiling and laughing, defines basic, typical and specific semantic components of their meaning. The analyzed verbs have the basic general double-aspect meaning that represents physical (configuration of lips, manner of sound producing, etc.) and psycho-semiotic (nature of expressed feelings or relation to smb./smth.) peculiarities of the non-verbal action. The research describes the syntactic stereotype of communicative event representation in fiction, drama and interview. The thesis presents the conceptual analysis of nouns that denote concepts of SMILE and LAUGH.
