Essay

The thesis is dedicated to the complex study of pottery as the essential component of the folk culture of the Slobodian Ukraine and to the analysis of the regional peculiarities of the handicraft during the late nineteenth - early twentieth centuries. The sources and literature, which considers the questions of the development of the Slobodian pottery are analyzed in Ukrainian ethnology and ceramology for the first time. The author investigates the social and economic conditions of the development of pottery in the region, makes the reasons of the decline of pottery centers clear, reconstructed the succession of the technological process of pottery manufacturing as well as connected with it professional knowledges and customs of potters; she studies the traditional range of eathenwares, defines the area and forms of its sale, role and place in the traditional culture of the historical and ethnographical region, characterizes the particularities of the home way of life of Slobodian potters and analysesthe economic status of pottery farms on the various stages of the development of this handicraft.
