Genesis of forms of teaching history in Ukrainian schools of the 20th century as an integral historical and methodical phenomenon is scientifically analysed in this dissertational research. The main stages of the development of teaching forms in the system of school history education has been revealed: 1) the first decades of the 20th century 2) in 1923 - 1934 3) in 1934 - 1964 4) since the year 1965 till the beginning of 1990s 5) in 1990s of the 20th century and peculiarities of practical application of the forms of teaching history at each of them has been determined. The work gives the highlight of the formation and development of approaches to the study of forms of teaching history in didactic and methodical science. Preconditions, the main stages, factors and tendencies of the development of the phenomenon under research in theory and practice of teaching history is defined, the conclusions have been made as to possibility of the use of the acquired experience in the practice of native schools.
