The object of research: households as an element of system of the socio-economic relations, which is formed and develops under influence of set of the concrete historical factors and tendencies. The aim of research: the complex analysis of a socio-economic nature of households, revealing of their role in economic system of a transitive type and potential concerning maintenance of its steady development. Methods of research: logical-historical, functional-evolutionary, systems, dialectical, institutional, statistical. Results: theoretical view of the nature of households, their reproduction functions in market and transitive economies has been expanded; the dependence of a standard of well-being of the population from level of institutionalisation of households has been proved; the interdependence between formation of adaptation strategies of households and trajectory of macroeconomic development has been revealed.
