Essay

The thesis is concentrated on theoretical overview of the basic sources for this research, with a special notion of the contribution made by Ukrainian and foreign scientists into the study of gender problems in modern society. Manuscript investigates the nature, communicative meaning, and the language code of the main gender concepts "a man" and "a woman" and their derivatives. It determines the role and the meaning of newspaper headlines in reader's perception of the press. It also shows the semantic and emotional importance of headline complexes in gender publications, where such complexes act as communicative vectors of modern gender discourse. A cognitive-semiotic approach is used in the study. It shows the influence of the language environment on the specification of the gender concepts "a man" and "a woman", which contributes to defining the social functions of representatives of both sexes and reveals important social characteristic features such as age, family ties, intimate relations etc. Theresearch made it possible to group certain words and phrases with estimating meanings that add semantic expressive stratum upon the nucleus: groups describing appearance, age, inner life, sex appeal etc. Also, the specific language of gender stereotypes and the role of Mass Media in their creation have been highlighted, and the factors that influence social consciousness in gender relations defined. The applied method of social typization takes into account the nature and periods of functioning of gender stereotypes in the language, dividing them into a) traditional; b) actualized; c) new. The results of the research can be used in teaching both the theory of journalism and in practical courses for students of journalism.
