Essay

The strategy approach is used for investigating the concept of understanding. The basic working notions are defined, such as "strategy of understanding" and "strategy-based trend of understanding". Methods and techniques of empirical study are described. Determined are the types of strategy-based trends of understanding of verbal and graphic creative tasks and the levels on which they display themselves in school students. The evidence is given that the process of understanding in middle school students involves objective systemic knowledge from different academic subjects taught at school. In younger adolescents, the strategy-based trend of understanding is accomplished through juxtaposition of knowledge acquired in the process of learning with benchmark knowledge, and through search for an analogue or alternative combination and putting it in a new situation.
