The thesis analyzes the way of life and culture of the Ukrainian rural intelligentsia of Galicia at the end of XlXth century till the 30th of the XXth century on the basis of numerous sources and literature. The main sources and the way of formation of rural intelligentsia, its origin social structure and financial position were investigated. The influence of different factors on the process of formation of intelligentsia, its number and the peculiarities of professional complement were also studied. By 1939 the representatives of rural intelligentsia mainly came from the families of priests, peasants, teachers, employees. There were also the representatives of free professions (lawyers, doctors, engineers) and of some specific social categories. These categories included unemployed intellectuals and persons who could not finish education because of unsatisfactory financial position and the First World War. The share of different professional groups in the structure of sources of intelligentsia constantly changed. In general the number of rural intelligentsia equaled about 5-6 thousand. Spiritual culture of intelligentsia, namely, its educational traditions, family and family holidays, public way of life were characterized in the thesis. The contribution of many of the representatives of intelligentsia into the development of science and culture of Halychyna was determined. In the families of intelligentsia they paid great attention to the learning of foreign languages, etiquette, playing musical instruments. They also acquaint themselves with art and theatre etc. There were different ways of social activity of rural intelligentsia. Courses for illiterate, lectures, conversations, reading aloud, cooperatives, agricultural circles, popularization of medicine and healthy way of life among peasants were very effective.
