Essay

The dissertation focuses on studying the problem of productive bilingualism in the context of translator's activity. The author has analyzed psychological bases of translator's activity as a specific kind of speech and thinking activity that unfolds through such successive stages as: motive, inner speech, semantic idea, outer speech. Psychological bases of bilingualism have been viewed through defining the meaning of such notions as speech organization, universal subject code, and universal subject scheme code/ Next, a conceptual model of translator's productive bilingualism has been constructed on the basis of the analysis of approaches and views of native and foreign researchers as to the process of speech and thinking activity. Motives, attitudes, intentions, knowledge, and translating strategies pertain to main components of the model. Conceptual knowledge containing linguistic, textual, communicative, and socio-cultural knowledge forms a cornerstone of translator's thesaurus. This knowledge's availability contributes to the effectiveness of applying cognitive-linguistic, personality, and conative translating strategies. Furthermore, the effectiveness of forming productive bilingualism as a basis for translator's activity through professional training has been experimentally proved.
