Essay

On the basis of complex study of sources, the dissertation presents general reconstruction of the history and social and economic structure of Yukhnivs'ka culture tribes. Archaeological map of the sites and their characteristics has been made. The solution of problem of the burial rite has been suggested. Systematization and analysis of the material complex of the culture allowed approaching to the elucidation of the main spheres of activity of Yukhniv population. Cattle breeding and agriculture with the secondary role of hunting and fishing were the basis of its economic development. Pottery, spinning, and weaving, bone carving and such crafts, as iron production and bronze casting were a rather developed branch. The social structure of the society at study has been determined as tribal. Chronology has been determined within the 7th - 1st centuries BC. It can be divided into three stages (7th - the late 5th century BC; 5th - 3d centuries BC; the late 3d - 1st centuries BC), which correspond to the period of formation, the highest rate of development and disappearance of this cultural formation. The data available nowadays allow referring this culture to the Baltic ethnic group. Key words: yukhnivs'ka culture, hillforts, cemeteries, chronology, social structure, ethnic group.
