Contacts between nomads and Slavs in Southeastern Europe were systematic and encompassed different aspects of life: cultural, military-political and economic. Relations between the ethnic groups occurred on different demographic levels. On the highest level the contacts occurred between separate tribes, tribal unions or their parts. The settling of the boreal steppe and steppe borders of Southeastern Europe by the Slavs led to direct contacts with nomadic tribes. Archeological evidence from the 6th and 7th centuries shows extensive cultural ties between the Slavic and nomadic societies. This is shown in the appearance in the Slavic culture of elements that are characteristic of nomadic practical and artistic works that include waist-belts and accessories, medallions and other items, including animal and anthropomorphic figurines. The presence of nomadic cultural elements in Slavic artifacts shows that contact occurred between the Slavs and various nomadic ethnic groups. Inter-ethnic contacts in variousspheres and different levels show the systematic nature of relations between Slavs and nomads in Southeastern Europe in the 6th and 7th centuries.
