The thesis deals with methods of forming the first year students' pronunciation sub-skills at pedagogical universities. Pronunciation sub-skills are regarded as part of students' professional phonetic competence, the contents and the structure of which are specified. The notion of a teacher's professionally-oriented pronunciation sub-skill has been defined. The difference between pronunciation sub-skills with the professional orientation and without it has been distinguished.In the research the methods of forming professionally-oriented pronunciation sub-skills of the first year students have been theoretically substantiated and practically developed. The methodology includes elements of modelling certain acts of teacher's professional activities by students as well as doing analytical and heuristic activities within the subsystem of phonetic exercises. Professionally-oriented pronunciation sub-skills are formed as part of professional pronunciation skills and phonetic methodological skills which are included into professional phonetic competence of future English teachers.The effectiveness of the methodology of forming students' professionally-oriented pronunciation sub-skills was verified during the experimental teaching. Recommendations as to implementation of the suggested methodology into the learning process have been worked out
