Essay

The spatial and territorial structure of Chernyakhiv, Carpathian barrows and Prague & Korchak cultures is analysed according to the following criteria: topography, space, distance and hydro-network. The analysis conducted made it possible to trace the dependence between the territorial position of archaeological sites and natural factors. Ecological & economic conditions of Upper Dnister and Upper Prut settlements are characterized through analysing the resource areas of settlements of the 3rd - 7th cc. AD. Peculiarities of resource areas determined the nature of economy in the sphere of making a living. The artefacts found in the process of archaeological enquiry in the region are coupled with geographical data. The complex approach applied allows for a new method of dealing with the problem of the economic development of ancient settlements. Key words: settling system, Chernyakhiv culture, culture of Carpathian barrows, Prague & Korchak culture, geography of settlements, resource area.
