Essay

The thesis deals with the problem of the exploration of musical processes - both creative and performing of late XVI - mid XVIII centuries in instrumental music. We presented the overview, analysis and systematization of existing sources that directly or indirectly touch on the topic of Old Ukrainian music. Here we had a look at relevant musical scores: tabulatures for lute and organ, and manuscript codes. We analyzed tractates on music theory and other written sources, as well as folklore.We was paid special attention to art pieces representing musicians and their instruments. A special chapter was dedicated to analysis of musical works, particularities of their style and genre classification. Also traced the links between Ukrainian musicians and musical circles of neighboring nations (Polish, Russian) and their relations and mutual influences and tried to explain a complicated issue of relationship between Orthodox Church and instrumental music. We were paid a special attention to musical instruments that were widely know in Ukraine, but for some reason were not properly researched yet (lute, husla, hudok) and had a look at the history of ensemble play.A special chapter was dedicated to the question of authentic performance of old musical works, that was performance on instruments, and in the style, that existed in the given period. Our work fills in the gap in Ukrainian music science, revealing creative musical processes in instrumental genre, sets new landmarks in the variety of instruments that were used in Ukraine.In the meantime, our research can be useful for institutions of musical education, especially for music history.
