Essay

This thesis examines the empirical evidence on the impact of performed FDI on technology diffusion, which is a central idea of technological change existed, as well as on productivity growth (production efficiency) and structural change of twelve major CEE countries (Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Croatia, Bulgaria, Russia and Ukraine) over the last fourteen years. All these transforming economies in the reform period have experienced significant changes, most of them are the EU countries now. The relationship between technological change and productivity attracted a great deal of attention among economists, reflecting a view that technological change is a major driving force behind technological progress and long-term economic growth. The nature and patterns of technological change are based on technology diffusion among the economy of innovations (new technologies), which are produced by high-technology industries and diffused through the restof economy using FDI, contributing to rising levels of technological progress, productivity, and economic development as a whole. To this theme recently are devoted many research papers examining the technological change of most developed countries. In this dissertation is developed own methodology allowing the calculation of impact of FDI on productivity growth and embodied technology diffusion through all the industries using the pooled regressions across industries (including service sectors) and constructing an input-output model based on issues as follows: productivity growth (value added and employment) by sector, FDI growth by sector in current year and over two last years, hightechnological FDI growth in the economy, dummy variables. In this dissertation is also analysed technological change using the calculation of change in the trade patterns, trade specialization, index of intra-industry trade as well as high technological export growth of most developed CEE countries and the role of FDI in it.
