Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the analysis of lexical basis, motivational relations and structural word-building peculiarities of Uman District surnames of the seventeenth to twenty first centuries. Appellative and onym lexis that is a building block of stems of the Uman District surnames is established by the way of lexico-semantic analysis. All structural variants of old Slavonic autochthonous names (composite and those derived from the composite names), Christian names and nicknames of appellative nature, as well as appellative modifiers of a person that motivated the surnames stems of the anthroponyms are under analysis. Patronyms (matronyms), possessives, locatives, kvalitatives, agentives and situational names are main motivation-nominative groups defined in the study. Derivational analysis of surnames of the period under study enabled us to come to a conclusion that they were formed by means of 5 ways: lexico-semantical, morphological, morphological-syntactical, syntactical and composition. Thestudy defines most typical word-building surname types on synchronic and diachronic levels. The research enables us to introduce the surname material of the territory, which is systematized in an inversive order. Comparative analysis of the Uman District surnames demonstrated that they function as a constituent part of Ukrainian anthroponymy.
