The thesis argues that euro introduction had positive effect of macroeconomic stability in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece. The thesis contains analysis of role of single currency in the economic development and prospects to form a currency zone for such integration groups as Gulf Cooperation countries, Association of South-Eastern Countries plus China, Japan and South Korea; Russia and Belarus. The theory of optimum currency area is used to discuss the gradual switch in Ukraine's exchange rate policy toward euro zone.
