Essay

The presented dissertational work is a research into non-conformism as a phenomenon of culture on creative material of Odessa artist group, one of the sources of underground culture in former USSR in 1960-80s. The research comprises artistic, cultural, philosophical, social, political, and historical factors of the time period under consideration. Non-conformism as a phenomenon of culture strives for updating on the basis of freedom, rebelliousness, heterodoxy, and creativity. The historiography of non-conformism and its theoretical aspects have been investigated. Description of Ukrainian national non-conformism art, peculiarities of its schools within the context of soviet and global art in 1960-80s has been contributed into. A regional direction (combined with theoretical and historical) was chosen: studying into cultural bases of a regional research- peculiarity of Odessa art school, the Black Sea Coast culture, southern Russian traditions, as well as avant-garde and modernism, both traditional andnew, developing a scientific historical and factual base. Artistic problems have been revealed through contextual links with the cultures of the present and past. The phenomenon of Odessa non-conformism has been considered; its aspects and features have been shown within the cultural context. Creative activity of Odessa artist group was focused on. Their art was alternative to official socialist realism and has become a link between avant-garde and modern art keeping traditions of national culture.
