Essay

The existence of characteristic features in the religious world view of the an-cient Chersonesos habitants is a consequence of the peculiar historic development of the Dorian ancient centre. These features lay in the predominance of the supreme warlike and defending goddess Parthenos during whole the antiquity. Here only the eponymous deity Chersonas, important for upholding the polis' autonomous origin, was worshipped. Parthenos was the patroness of the community, and in the first cc. AD her cult was performed in some domestic shrines. All the other polis cults were of secondary importance in the population's religious consciousness. The evidence for Heracles and Dionysus' worship in religious unions smaller than the community members with their families is determined. The circle of gods worshipped in families was much wider. Some most typical for Chersonesos types of altars, terracotta depic-tions from burials and houses, copied during centuries, mark the traditionalism of re-ligious beliefs relatedwith the idea of the ancestors-protectors and the beyond. There was a small high social stratum of habitants ready to perceive the new cults and mys-teries. Mysterious and traditional ideas about the beyond were reflected in the diver-sity of the burial cult. Key words: religious world view, ancient Chersonesos, pantheon, burial cult.
