Essay

The thesis is a generalization of archeological, architectural, and epigraphycal material connected with Christian cave architecture of the Upper and Middle Dniester. There was created the classification and typology of rooms, petroglyphs and graffiti, and ascertained the position of these monuments in the historical process of the region. On the basis of comparative analysis with the cave monasteries of Balkan region, Moldavia, Middle Dnipro region, and Crimea there was defined that the time of appearance of these monuments is 11th century. The peculiarities of the rooms planning and rock images let us see Bulgarian monkhood influence on the local caving tradition. The ideological platform for the monasteries members was Hesychasm. From the end of the 17th century on the investigated territory the series of unique Greek Catholic monuments connected with the cult of St.Onuphrius appeared. The complex of found artifacts proves the continuality and inheritance of the investigated phenomenon from the 11thcentury till its' gradual disappearance in the 18th cent.
