Essay

The dissertation deals with structural and functional semantic peculiarities of groups of connotative toponymes different in character, reasons for emergence and conditions of functioning in Russian, Ukrainian and English languages. A comprehensive research of the structure and functions of well-known intra- and interlingual toponymic lexems, revealing in them components which determinate the connotative sense of semantic aura has been done. A considerable part of the research is devoted to the critical analysis of lexicographic experience of proper names-toponymes in different languages and to the development of onymography of connotative proper names in Y.S. Otin’s works including his «Dictionary of Connotative Proper Names».
