Essay

On the material of F. Gladkov's prose about "socialist building" the thesis studies the contradictions between ideological and realistic in the socialist realism of the 1920-1930-ies. The image of the enemy, essential for the literature of the period, is scrutinized and its stereotypeness is revealed in the novels "Cement", "Energy", and the story "New Earth". The analysis of the metaphors of the enemy image (infernal, chthonic, teratological symbolism) shows its mythological nature. The contradictions of the images of the intraparty enemy and "demoralized communist", which originated the types of the leader and secret collaborator in F. Gladkov's works, are examined. F. Gladkov's realism is similar to naturalism of the physiological sketch. Comparison of its features in F. Gladkov's documentary sketch and fiction is carried out. The textological analysis of the different editions of Gladkov's works indicates that initial naturalism, allowing to give an unvarnished picture of the Stalinist reality, was replaced by far from life "ideologically defensible verisimilitude".
