The thesis focuses on the problem of teaching English emotional intonation with video the 2-nd year students of linguistic Universities and Philological departments. In the paper the methodology of forming students’ English phonetic competence by teaching them emotional intonation with video is theoretically substantiated and practically elaborated. The analysis of the phenomenon of emotional intonation, which is considered as a separate element in the system of closely connected indicators of emotional speech, enabled us to organize the process of teaching emotional intonation alongside with paralinguistic and extralinguistic features. This approach increases students’ potential for recognizing and understanding the semantic nuances and the full communicative meaning of intonation. Video (video materials made for the classroom) has been determined as the most appropriate language-teaching aid to provide this method. The system of exercises to teach emotional intonation with video has been developed.Two series of experimental teaching have been conducted to prove the suggested methodology validity. Its optimal variant, in which video is used as the main language-teaching aid for teaching emotional intonation and audio is used for recording student’ speech, has been corroborated.
