Essay

In the thesis on the basis of many factual materials, the thematic group of the vocabulary marking the names of food products, dishes and beverages of the old Ukrainian language is analyzed. The lexical-etymological analysis of identified nomens is made, the main ways and means of their nomination have been defined and the structural and morphological features have been established. The ratio of Ukrainian to borrowed names is calculated, and the usage of these lexemes in modern Ukrainian literary language and dialects is examined. The following sources were analyzed: published works in Old Ukrainian, including the vocabulary of modern linguists, the texts published in recent years that hadn't previously been objects of lexicographical research, the historical dictionaries of XIV-XVII centuries, Ukrainian dictionaries of dialects and standard dictionaries, and the materials of the cart catalogue of "Dictionary of Ukrainian Language of the XVI - first half of XVII centuries" and "Historical Dictionary of Ukrainian Language" (edited by E. Tymchenko). The materials of other researches of the Slavonic languages have been used for comparison, which has given an opportunity to establish the mutual influences and to define the peculiarities of the formation and the development of Ukrainian lexical system in the investigated period. At the end of the XVII century the nomenclature of food products, dishes and beverages of Ukrainian national cuisine had already formed general features.
